Let Me Fall

Seriously, I haven’t looked up or written out lyrics to a song since I was a teenager. But there’s a song (by Josh Groban, who else?) that seems really significant lately, not only for me but for all those who are endeavoring to do great things, who have goals and dreams, and who are struggling against not only their own doubts about themselves and their abilities but those of others as well. Maybe this will speak to you as it does me. (I’ve put a link to the title as well.)

Let Me Fall

Let me fall
Let me climb
There’s a moment when fear
And dreams must collide

Someone I am
Is waiting for courage
The one I want
The one I will become
Will catch me

So let me fall
If I must fall
I won’t heed your warnings
I won’t hear them

Let me fall
If I fall
Though the phoenix may
Or may not rise

I will dance so freely
Holding on to no one
You can hold me only
If you too will fall
Away from all these
Useless fears and chains

Someone I am
Is waiting for my courage
The one I want
The one I will become
Will catch me

So let me fall
If I must fall
I won’t heed your warnings
I won’t hear

Let me fall
If I fall
There’s no reason
To miss this one chance
This perfect moment
Just let me fall

  • Very powerful words, Steph. I can see why Josh’s music means so much to you. I like this.

  • “The one I will become will catch me” reminds me of what Elizabeth Gilbert says at the end of Eat Pray Love about the person she is then pulling the person she was toward her.

Does that make sense? I’d love to think that somewhere in the future, I’ve got an eye out for my past self and how she’s doing. That’s just cool.

  • Brett: And thanks to you, it means so much more.

Beth: Eat, Pray, Love is one of my very favourite books. And it makes perfect sense. I think the concept of what Josh and Elizabeth are saying is beautiful, hopeful, inspiring.

  • Steph,

I was happy to do something nice for you.

You know what is nice about it too, is that you sharing your feelings about the music gives it a new meaning for me too. I listen to so much music of all kinds, and I always knew about Josh (Cathryn likes him).

Now I *really* listen to the words, and they are powerful. So I have you to thank for that. I never would have known if you hadn’t expressed your love for the music.

  • @ Brett: Well now, I have to be careful then, or you might fall in love with Josh, too. ;)

  • Oh my God, you guys should see it here. It’s CRAZY outside!! No worries about having a green Christmas, that’s for sure! And it’s showing no sign of stopping. It’s blowing hard.

Perfect evening to get cozy. I’m editing by the tree right now, but pizza dough is making itself in the breadmaker and I predict pizza and a movie tonight! :)

  • @steph,

Don’t worry, I won’t steal him from you ;) he’s yours. I might go for beers with him, perhaps!

Yeah, you folks are really getting a beating down there – stay warm, and stay at home where it is safe.

Mmm… pizza and a movie, if we lived closer we’d have to give you a call :)

  • @Brett: You’d be very welcome.

  • Oh…. GROUP HUG, you two! :-D

  • Come on Friar, you KNOW you’re part of the group hug ;)

  • hahaha!! You’re just jealous, Friar. You’re welcome too, you know.

    SMOOCH!!

  • I do envy you your snow, more than words! I wish I could sit outside and watch it, or watch it through the window in a dark room, like I did as a kid.

Instead, I sit and watch our Christmas tree, the most beautiful tree I’ve ever seen, standing there so lovely, in its twinkling lights and evergreen perfume.

At least it feels like snow — it’s almost cold enough outside, now. We did have snow for about two hours in December 2006. It was soooooooo odd to see saguaros dusted with snow.

Lucky you to have a white Christmas! Please take some photos so we desert dwellers can live it vicariously.

And save me a slice of pizza!

    Em : )

  • Em: It would be so cool if I could have all of you over to eat pizza! :)

We are in the throes of a new snow storm. You should see it. It’s very heavy and visibility is low and everything is buried once again after everyone shovelled themselves out yesterday…we are expecting another 20 or so cm today (about 8 or 9 inches?)

I’ll definitely take pictures for you desert dwellers!

  • @Em

You must be from Arizona, then (seeing how you mentionned saguaros).

I drove by Mt. Lemon Ski Hill a few years ago. (Outside of Tucson). It’s the southermost ski hill in the US. It’s high up enough that there are pine trees and lush grass, it looks like British Columbia. It’s hard to believe it’s the high desert just a few miles lower down the road.

You can HAVE our snow, though. We got too much of it. I’m experiencing the same storm Steph is. 20 cm. Streets arent’ plowed yet.

Ahhh…just a minor annoying snowfall. I went cross-country skiing in it this afternoon.

Don’t mind Steph, though. She’s from SOUTHERN Ontario..they can’t take the cold and snow like us hardy folk “Up north” :-)

  • @ Friar: Pfft!! We’re only four hours apart! And I’m in Eastern Ontario!

While you’re at -13 with no windchill, we’re at -11 with a windchill. Not that different. Still snowing here…but it was worse a few minutes ago, when I couldn’t see across the street!

What’s wacky is they’re predicting above-zero temps this week! And RAIN! but by the weekend it will go back to snow…

    Ah, winter.

  • @Steph

Yes but we’re FURTHER North. So we know how to deal with it better! :-D

I predict another major storm on the 27th. That’s when I’m supposed to drive over and see friends in T.O

  • What a great song! I’m liking Josh Groban more and more, thanks to you. Funny, I remember him on Ally McBeal years ago; in fact, that’s the first time I heard him sing. Still gives me goosebumps.

(20 cm? Pshaw! We got 21 inches of snow this weekend!)

  • @ Friar: over here on Friday they’re calling for rain! We have another winter storm watch right now but they’re predicting snow and rain all week and weekend here. We’re going to +8 on Saturday?!

@ Rebecca: I listened to him all day today at work (they humour me). :) His words are so meaningful and beautiful and the way he delivers them…sighhh.

And yeah, “You’re Still You” is one of my favourites!

  • @Steph

(Never mind that it was minus 28C this morning…now we’re going above freezing tomorrow!)

ARGHH. Rain is awful, when you know it’s gonna freeze again and turn the snow into cement. That’s how ice dams on roofs form, it cost me $1000 to fix the damage from last year.

Well, it’s Chirstmas. I’ve been watching the cartoons to cheer me up. (I just saw Rudolph again tonight)!

  • Hey Friar. : )

Yup, I’m in AZ — it looks like you drove through my neck of the woods. Well, not quite my neck, but I’ve been to Mt. Lemmon to see the snow. It’s a three and a half hour drive so we don’t go as often, but one year we did, and it was wonderful. Lots of little children there, too, seeing snow for the first time.

And the pine trees are amazing, yes, and it *is* as if they’re from a different part of the world, right smack dab in the desert of AZ.

You didn’t stop to ski? I hear the skiing is wonderful.

    Em
